The Effect of Calcium on Elongation in Hypocotyl Segments of Soybean Sprouts

Abstract
Hypocotyl segments of shade-grown soybean sprouts (var, Kumdo) were floated in solutions containing various substances and kept for 72 hours at approximately 25¡É of laboratory conditions. Increase in hypocotyl elongation was thus obtained as a measure of the present experiments.
Calcium at the physiological level inhibited the clongation of hypocotyl segments, while potassium promote it. The action of calcium was further enhanced by, a slight addition of boron. Although IAA and GA respectively promoted the elongation over the control, an addition of calcium to them resulted in reduced degree of their promotive effects.
